Cannot backup to pcmcia disk on my laptop

I have a Toshiba laptop and a pcmcia 5GB disk which I bought for backup.
The operating system is windows XP.
When I try to copy (documents and settings)to the PCMCIA disk I get the
following message:-
"cannot copy ntuser.dat. Close any programmes using it and try again"
Ioes anyone know where i go from here please?
The documents and settings folder begins to copy before I get the above
message
and have to cancel the copy.

that is a system file and is in use when you are logged in log in as a
different user and you will be able to back up that file if you really want
to
