Cannot Access Certain Websites IE6 SP2

Hi there, hope someone can help. I cannot access certain US-based news
websites anymore. I believe the trouble started after SP2 was downloaded.
Websites in question are USA Today, CNN, Detroit News and a couple of others.
I have been checking my security settings and anti-virus software, but cannot
determine any issues. I

I do not know whether these sites need a certain settings profile. I can
access other sites with no problems.

Has anyone experienced something similar and/or know what the problem is ??

Thanks Peter

Hi Peter,

You don't say what "cannot access" means.

1. Start by deleting the temporary internet files from IE, Tools, Options ->
Delete files
2. If you get "Page cannot be displayed" on those sites, your HOSTS file
might be blocking it. Make sure Windows displays hidden files, and do a
search for the files called HOSTS (without extension). Rename it to
hosts.old and reboot.
3. If it are parts of pages that you cannot see, you might miss a plugin.
The first candidates are Java Virtual Machine (http://java.sun.com) or Flash
Player (http://www.macromedia.com).

Kind regards

Hans, thanks for the response. For the websites in question I receive the
"page cannot be displayed" error message.

I have deleted all temporary files & cookies without success.

RE: 'Hosts', I have 5 files in total:

HOSTS in C:\I386
HOSTS in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
HOSTS.MSN in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
LMHOSTS in C:\I386
LMHOSTS in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Do I need to rename them all or just the first 2 ??

RE. 'Make sure Windows displays hidden files'. Sorry, but how do I do this.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Peter
