Can you fry memory?

R

Rick Miller

I was reinstalling a memory stick and wasn't paying attention and I think I
installed it backwards. I got a series of long beeps. I took out the memory
2 sticks(2x 256mb) and reinstalled them correctly in varoius slots but to no
avail. Is it just the memory that's bad or is it also the board? Thanks.

The SDRAM (PC 100, PC 133) and DDR RAM are keyed and can only be firmly
installed one way. If you installed correctly, the stick could be bad.

Yes, you can fry memory, although it's not a given that you did. And
you could also fry the motherboard. You will have to test the memory in
another motherboard and try some other memory in that motherboard.
There's no way to know for sure what happened without testing with known
good parts.

You sure can. I recommend a light olive oil, a few shallots and a sprinkle
of hot sauce. Yummy.

There a good way to know if you fried memory. Check gold connectors bottom
of memory, if some are dark, yeah you fried it....

Just smell it. If it has that burnt electronics smell, you know you're out
of pocket a lot of cash.

A serious reply to the topic now, but because of the way the thing is keyed,
you shouldn't have been able to install it backwards. It wouldn't have gone
in the slot.

If you were able to actually jam it in backwards then you most likely broke
the socket with the possibility of wrecking the connector on the memory as
well. If you powered it on that way it definately could have done damage.
You would have smelled electronic damage most likely.

If you persevere you can achieve anything. Once I saw the aftermath when a
computer programmer pulled out a SIMM without first undoing the latches.
Sad.....

The first time I bought a DVD, I had no idea about the thing that holds the
DVD that you push it to pop the DVD out. I thought it was just like a CD
where you just hold by the edges and pull it out.

As a result, I broke the DVD. It sort of splintered internally all around
the centre. Looks very funky. Luckily I took it back and got a replacement.

Thanks to all that replied. I've got new memory on the way. If the
motherboard is fried, any suggestions? Just need onboard sound and
onboard firewire/usb headers would be nice.

How bib was the hammer you used to install it backwards.

More than likley you broke the slot header or MB.

You are correct that RAM modules and sockets are keyed, but it's
possible to install them backwards if you FORCE them, or, just as bad,
it's possible to get a RAM module partially installed into a socket and
think it's installed correctly. I've seen users do it, and in a
situation that surprised even me, I did it myself on a motherboard with
RAM sockets that were rotated 180 degrees so that one RAM module had pin
1 on the left, while the other was turned 180 degrees and had pin 1 on
the right (with the parallel module facing in the other direction).

Further, he said in his post that he did NOT have the module installed
correctly the first time.

Yup, I got it wrong once (in a happy stupor) and something on the board
went 'pop'

-board fubared, Dimm was okay though.

Yep I think that's what happened. Was on the phone while installing a
stick of memory and turned on the computer and got a series of beeps and
a burnt electronic smell. Tried the sticks in another computer and they
work. Time for another mobo. Oh well.

on occassion... you can almost put them in backwards..hehe
Kind of a tight fit but it can be done..lol. And they will for sure fry.
