can you change drive letters?

B

Bob M.

I recently installed XP on my notebook and it assigned the CD/DVD drive as
E: and the external CD-RW drive as D:

I would like to switch them because my CD burner software doesn't find the
CD-RW drive anymore. Can I change the drive letters so it was like before
or is there a better answer.

Thanks in advance.

Hi:
The easy way to do this is unplug the external drive and reboot, it will
redetect the drives and assign the lower letter,,if this does not occur, then
you want to delete the external letter and then assign that letter to the
internal drive CD/DVD drive: heres how and then the next section to assign
the lower letter to get the drive and pathway back the way it was.

How to remove a drive letter
To remove an existing drive letter on a drive, on a partition, or on a
volume, follow these steps: 1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the
Administrators group.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and
Maintenance.
3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then
click Disk Management in the left pane.
4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume
that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter
and Paths.
5. Click Remove.
6. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the removal.
The drive letter is removed from the drive, from the partition, or from the
volume that you specified.

Bob,

What you're trying to accomplish can be done in Disk Management. Go to
Start/Right click My Computer/Manage. Double click on Disk management.
Right click the drive(s) you want to change and select "Change Drive Letters
and Paths".
