Can sound recorder capture from modem?

Can I use the Windows Sound Recorder to capture a phone conversation through
the modem (connected as an extension to my phone line), instead of putting a
microphone next to the phone?

I know there is 3rd party software that can do this, but I was wondering if
it can be configured through Windows alone.

Thanks for any help with this!

Hi,

No, it can't. The sound recorder is fairly rudimentary and does not provide
for that.

Creative Recorder that comes with a Soundblaster card can record anything that
is coming from your speakers. Just set it to "Stereo Mix" instead of a mic or
line in.

I just did a test and had no problem using "sound recorder" to record off my
phone line. I have a speed dialer on this old WinME machine. My audio
options are Ensonic Mixer / recording / All. I could select mic, aux, CD,
modem and various other sources but there is a setting "All". I started
"sound recorder" and then from my speed dialer, dialed a phone number. All
the audio was recorded including the dial tone, dialing and voice at other
end.
In fact, I can use this method to record streaming audio from the Internet.
Of course I could have just selected "modem" but "All" catches everything
that is sent to my sound card. I'm not sure how to get the modem to go off
hook to listen in. Maybe some AT command. Also, I have a voice modem.

Thanks, I found out I can change the Phone and Modem Settings thru Control
Panel--setting to Stereo Mix--and it worked, with no additional software.
BUT, is there a way to listen in on an ongoing phone conversation. Using
Windows Phone Dialer allows me to record, but not listen in and record.
