I have reconfigured my mail "account " settings over and over according to
their "help" instructions. No matter what I do, I still get this stupid
message. Where am I going wrong ?

Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

Which help instructions? Does this lead you to more useful instructions?

Note that many email setup instructions leave out any settings that
happen to match the defaults for new accounts, so it may be useful
to remove your email account under Windows Mail, then restart
Windows Mail and add the account again.

I too can send (sent two emails to myself at hotmail), but cannot receive.
The error message is:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'POP.ecoweb.co.zw', Server: 'POP.ecoweb.co.zw',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

For the past six weeks all had been working fine.
I have deleted the account and re-created it. Can send but still not receive.
Also I cannot (since 6 March 2008) download updates other than for Defender.
All suggestions welsome

Chances are, one of your settings is not correct.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties.
Servers. Uncheck "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

Chances are, this problem is caused by a non-compatible antivirus.
As a test, uninstall your antivirus, reboot, then try Windows Mail
again. If the problem is cured, we can recommend a free
antivirus that is more compatible with Windows Mail.

Some email providers prefer that their server names have no capital letters.

I saw on some of your earlier messages that you had uninstalled a Norton
antivirus program. Did you then run this cleanup program to take care of
what the uninstall left behind?

Sometimes, you even have to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

What if any antivirus programs do you have now? Do they offer the option
to disable email scanning? If so, disable it and see if that helps. If so,
leave
it disabled.

I suspect that some of the recent Vista updates are not even offered for
download unless you have the Vista SP1 update installed. Do you?

Gary...You hit it right on the head. I unchecked "Log on using Secure
Password Authentication" and it works like a charm. Thanks a million !

Thanks Gary. The whole service from my ISP was running badly, for which they
apologised today, by sending me an email. Not the only thing running badly
here, in Zimbabwe, but at least this problem was fixed. So, I can again
receive as well as send.
I run only Windows Defender. Should I rather get some other anti-virus or
some additional anti-virus program? Any suggestions welcome, but from
Zimbabwe cannot pay.
The download of updates problem continues, but I am in touch by email with
mssupport, who have specific suggestions.
