Can Not Load Pictures Into My Laptop & FrontPage 2002 As gifs.

Hi -
Has anybody had this happen? or do you know what to do?

I just bought a new Compaq laptop, we are using FrontPage 2002; and save our
pictures in FrontPage under a folder named images.

I tried downloading pictures at my suppliers today for the first time - I
can download the .jpg, but when I try to download the .gif (s) it will only
allow me to. When I try to save the smaller picture as a gif however I am
given only 2 options within FrontPage - either .bmp or png. I am not
familiar with png at all. I need the .gif for our store pictures.

I did try to save the pictures in 'My Pictures' on C drive also - they will
save if I type in the .gif - but the pictures look horrible when I copy them
into my FrontPages. I I have already emptied the temp files in My Computer
and on the Internet (Explorer); and the cookies etc.

Thank you so much! Chris Williams Global Discount Products and Gift and
Gift Ideas

Clear your temp folder and IE cache folders and increase the size. Also do not save directly into
FP, save to a folder on your desktop, then import the images into your current open FP web / site.

Throw us a bone or two. We are good but we don't read
minds:

1. where are these pictures coming from?
2. fill in the blank "when I try to download the .gif (s)
it (what is 'it') will only allow me to (blank)."
3. "I tried downloading pictures at my suppliers today
for the first time". Download from where to where? What
steps did you take? If you are downloading using Internet
Explorer, perhaps your question is better directed in an
IE newsgroup. Remember, they don't read minds either.
4. why is it you must have a gif file for your store
pictures? A browser will display gif, jpg and png format
picture files.

Thomas - when you say to save to my desktop do you mean save the pictures
under "My Computer" on the C drive. I am sorry in the 3 years I have been
doing this I have only ever saved the pictures into FrontPage. Thank you for
your help, Chris

gif's are generally used for graphic type images as they don't handle many colors or gradients too well...use jpgs for photo images, gifs for graphics

Import them into FP, don't save them into FP from the outside world.

If you are downloading or saving from a web page in IE, save all images to a folder on your desktop,
then import (drag-n-drop) the images into your current open FP web / site.

Hi - thank you for your help. I thought gif(s) were smaller than jpg(s). We
want to keep all the pictures we have on our site as small as possible - the
upload for the customer is faster I thought. By making the jpg small do I
cause the upload time to shorten? Our store is gifts and it is extremely
important that we don't leave a customer wiating forever to see the various
things we have for sale (approx. 1500 pages/IMAGES.) Thank you for your help
again, Chris

Gifs are smaller...but also lack colors...more suited to line drawings, graphics, etc., jpgs for photos.

Sometimes people make jpgs small by resizing them in FP...don't do this...FP is not a good image editor. It's best to resize, crop, optimize, them in a third party image editor (Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, PhotoElements, or IrFanView (a good freebie))

Then Import them into FP, then from within FP place them in your design. DONT manipulate jpgs too much!...jpg is a lossy format so everytime you open/save/resave you are losing pixels. Work in a non lossy format until you are happy with your image, then the last thing you do is convert to jpg. (keep the original)

Hopefully you are not gonna put 1500 images all on one page so it shouldn't be a problem ;-)

Hi - thank you for all the wonderful info. I see what you are saying. We
only drop ship all our merchandise and so the pictures on our site are very
important to us - however the supplier through which we download all our
pictures posts them in only gif and jpg , so we work with htis. No we are
not trying to use all 1500 pictures on one page - VERY FUNNY! We have about
1500 individual item/merchandise pages. Thank you again, Chris
