Can not burn DVDs after upgrade to XP

I was using a Ricoh RW5125A to burn DVDs with Ahead Nero 6.6 on an Athlon XP
1700+ system running Windows 2000 Pro. I upgraded to XP Pro SP2. I can still
burn CDs on the device (Primary Slave, IDE Chan0, Dev1) but it hangs when I
try to load a blank DVD+R.

Remove and re-install Nero. It could be that the built-in CD writing tools
are "over-riding" the setting for Nero. You can not seem to have both
active.

Tried uninstalling/reinstalling Nero?

This just in:
I can not write OR play DVDs in this player. I can play DVD files from HD,
but I get an I/O error message when trying to play a DVD-ROM

This is sounding more and more like a hardware issue.
Coincidental that you installed SP2 right before it happened.
However - you could remove the device from device manager and reboot - let
Windows reinstall the drivers.
