Can no longer print text in front of objects

We use Windows 2000 Professional SP4 with Office 2000. The version of Word 2000 is 9.0.6926 SP3

The problem is this
Documents that we have which always printed normally now will not print text that is in front of a drawing object. Remainder of each document prints normally
Sometimes to highlight a block of text, the author(s) placed a filled rectangle behind the text (maybe not best method, but it worked). Looking at the object properties, all signs indicate that the object is farthest back, behind text, and that text is in front of object. Viewing the document, everything looks normal. And in print preview, one sees the text in front of the object, so it visually appears that there is a lightly shaded rectangle with text in front of it (within its borders). Trying to print these documents, they no longer print any text where there is an object - only the object is printed. These same docs always printed before without any problem. Converting the doc into a PDF has the same result - no text appears where there is an object present
Have tried several printers, both networked and local - same result
All Word documents here use the "normal" template, and all format parameters look OK
I browsed the Microsoft KB, but could not find anything applicable

Thanks in advance for any advice

If you don't get a satisfactory answer here, try
microsoft.public.word.printingfonts. Note that there may be a printer
Properties setting that determines the order in which text and graphics are
printed.
