Can no longer log in with valid NET Passport

I can log in to my Hotmail account in I.E. but something happened tonite and
W. Messenger cannot log in anymore.
I get a small dialog with the following text:

We were unable to sign you in to .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of
a problem with the service or with your Internet connections.Please make
sure you're connected to the Internet.

Click the Help button to check the current .NET service status.

When I do try the Help or the service status link I get a "This page is not
available..."
Since my .NET passport didn't change and I'm on the Internet should I not be
presented with another reason why I cannot log in with Messenger? Could it
possibly happen that the Messenger service is truly down? Hard to believe.

Any help will be thankfully appreciated.
