Can I use XP to remote assistance to a 2000 machine

I have XP Pro at home but I need to connect to my father inlaw's computer.
He's running 2000 pro? IS there an easy way to help set this up on his end
from here? Obviously if I need to use remote assistance to help him he's not
a great PC user.

As Doug points out, Windows 2000 Professional does not support being a host
for a remote desktop or remote assistance session, only a client. You can
look into one of the various flavors of VNC for simple connection needs, or
if you need security look into one of the versions that includes encryption.

Rich makes a good point of using VNC, TightVNC has the security you
need but can be a bit difficult to configure especially through
firewalls and routers. You have plenty of options but I would
recommend just downloading Microsoft Terminal Services Client from the
web and installing it on the Win2K machine. I've installed it on Win98
machines as well and connected to them with ease. MSTSC is basically
Remote Desktop in XP Pro.

Your other option is checking out some web based remote applications
such as..

www.logmein.com
www.gotomypc.com

Each service has a free option but I personally use Logmein as it
allows me to install the client on as many machines I want and I can do
simple troubleshooting just like I would be at the machine. The best
part is that there is no need to open ports or make changes to your
firewall hardware or software (just allow the program to work on the
network).

Good Luck!

Just like I can in XP I want my father inlaw to be able to request
assistance from me using my .net passport or something like that and then I
want to be able to take control of his Windows 200 PC from my XP machine and
fix whatever seems to be the problem. What software would you recommend?

Also What are the chances that a new PC user like my father inlaw can setup
the software so that I can connect to his PC?
