Can I use an USB cable to transfer files from my laptop to my PC?

I have about 5.0GB of stuff I want to transfer from my old laptop to my new
PC, but I am too cheap to spend any money on NIC's or network cables. I have
a USB cable and am quite surprised that neither computer recognises the
others existence.

Basically I am looking for a free and relatively simple way of transfering
my crap. Any ideas.

I do not have a DVD burner or a credit card.

There are USB type cables that can be used for this purpose but they are
made with a NIC in the middle so as to act as a network connection and they
cost about $50.

What gave you the idea using USB to USB would provide a network connection?

Buy a 1G flash driver for under $50. It will last you for years.

You can also use a parallel cable and create a direct connection. Under
network connections, create a new connection, then select advanced, you
should see Direct Parallel connection there. You might even have a parallel
cable around, they are/were used with most printers.
