Can I transfer an XP license?

I have a laptop that died on me. It came with XP Home, however I purchased XP
Professional Upgrade from OfficeMax and installed it. Now that the laptop is
dead, I was wondering if I can install XP Pro on my desktop? Would the
activation of XP Pro work since I can no longer run the copy of XP Pro on the
dead laptop?

You can transfer it. Retail versions can be transferred as long as they are
removed from the original computer.
You may get a message that it is activated too many times, but this only
means you will need to phone in the activation. Follow the prompts on the
screen to get the activation string.

Your retail license for XP Pro is licensed to you, and you may move
that license from computer to computer to computer as you see fit,
provided that it is only ever installed on a single computer at any
given point in time.

If the laptop has died and is unusable you can install the upgrade on
your desktop machine.
