Can I Put Comments in Properties/Summary Area of Bitmap Files?

J

J. Danniel

Hi everyone.

I'm using Windows XP Pro, SP-2.

I have two questions about adding comments to files.

Question #1: I added some comments in the Properties/Summary/Comments
area of a few files. These files included .txt, .doc, .pdf, .jpg, and
..xls files. When I tried to do this with some bitmap images that I
created in Paint Shop Pro, I could not. The entire Summary screen was
greyed out.

The question is: Is it possible to enter comments into the Summary
area for bitmap files, in Windows XP? If so, what do I have to do? I
do not want to use long file names as descriptions of these files, so
I'm looking to create descriptions of them elsewhere and embed them in
the file.

Question #2: Is it possible to print out the comments of the files?
If so, what is the procedure, and can I select a group of files'
comments and print them out all at once, rather than one at a time?
I'd like to print out the comments of about 50 or 60 files, so working
individually is not practical.

Thank you!

I do not know of a work-around for question #1.

For question #2.......

In Windows Explorer right-click on the Bar with Name, Date Modified, etc. and
choose "Comments"

Then you can use any of several methods to print out the filenames and
associated comments.

To add a "Print Directory" feature to Explorer, go to
this KB Article.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q272623&

Or you can download Printfolder 1.2 from.....

http://no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/

I use PF 1.2 and find it to be more than adequate with custom features.

OR Go to DOS(Command) prompt and directory.
Type DIR >MYFILES.TXT

All the above create a *.TXT file which can be opened in your choice of word
processor.

One more method if you want to by-pass the *.TXT file and pull directly to
Excel is to use Tushar Mehta's Excel Add-in. This allows filtering and
sorting once you have the data in Excel.

http://www.tushar-mehta.com/ scroll down to Add-ins>Directory Listing.

Download the ZIP file and un-zip to your Office\Library folder.

Good info...but the following article
is the one you need for Windows XP:

Well, all I can say John about this is:
&^%*&* Microsoft. Excuse the language!
How stupid can Microsoft be, not providing an easy way to print a directory.
We could do this with DOS!
Unbelievable. No excuse for this. None.
Don't worry I have registered my complaint.

I know what you mean...but at least we have
several ways to overcome this issue thanks
to Gord Dibben's informative post.

Time to update the URL.

Thanks John.

LOL! Maintenance and updating takes
up so much time I rarely get to do any
real computing.....like playing games
and making greeting cards )

You're welcome...and thanks to you for
the excellent info.

Thanks for the information! But sadly, I'm really much more
interested in putting comments in bitmap files than printing the
comments out. I'm interested in both, obviously, enough to ask about
them, but if I had to choose, I'd prefer the first thing. Oh well.
Thanks again! Jd

Why not convert the .bmp files to .jpg?
Not only will this conversion allow you to
add your comments to the files but will
also reduce your file size.

The excellent freeware IrfanView can
do a batch format conversion.

Download IrfanView 3.95

(get the plug-ins too)
