Can I Password-Protect Topics in a .CHM or PDF File?

Hi everyone.

I'm not really sure which MS group to post this question, so I hope
you'll please bear with me.

I want to create an e-book, preferably in .CHM format, that has
limited-use features, much like shareware. Specifically, I want some
of the topics to be viewable and accessible, but other topics should
be hidden or blocked from the user in some way.

In order for the user to view all of the topics, a password, serial
number, or unlock code of some sort would be required.

Does anyone know if this is possible with .CHM format? I am familiar
with such CHM authoring tools as Robo Help and Help & Manual, but am
not sure if password-protecting portions of the file is possible
(yet).

If this is not possible with .CHM, is it possible with some other
format, such as PDF?

I know a workaround to this: I could create two .CHM files: One that
has only some of the topics, and another that is complete. The
limited-topic version would be available for evaluation purposes, and
the user could e-mail me or submit a web form request for the complete
version. This requires almost twice the work, since two CHM authoring
projects would have to be created.

Can anyone please offer me some advice and feedback on which tools
might be best for this task? What would you recommend using, to limit
access of textual documentation?

Thank you very much! Jack Danniel
