Can I mix drives? SATA and PATA?

yes if you have sata port(s), mixing is not a problem. You
might then need to readjust the motherboard bios so the
intended drive is the one the system boots to.

While this is certainly possible, in practice it can be a real PITA and
require careful bios adjustments. Not that it won't work (because it will
work eventually), but it can be a headache till it does.
