Can I make a full WinXP CD

D

Daniel Schaffer

I run Win XP Pro SP2. The Windows disk supplied when I bought my computer
was an OEM version. It does not allow me to enter Recovery mode.

Can I make a full WinXP Pro CD from the I386 files on my machine? And if I
can, would I be within my Microsoft license?

Many thanks in advance,

No it is not possible to create a full XP CD from your i386 directory. You
will have to purchase one if you don't have one. If you want to access the
Recovery Console you can create a bootable CD using this ISO image file
www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/tools/bootdiscs/xp_rec_con.zip Download and unzip.
You need to use CD Burning software that can properly burn and ISO image (ie
Nero, CD BurnerXP, scroll to see info here
http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm )

The resulting CD can be booted. You will see the Windows Installation
screen. Select the open to use the Recovery Console and you are in. This ISO
will not create an XP installation disc. It is simply an image of the
Recovery Console.

No - you have an OEM version and that's all you get. Also, the license is
from the OEM vendor, not Microsoft.

Hi Xandros,

Many thanks for precise and prompt answer. I'll follow your suggestion.

By the way, is there any reason for me to want an XP CD other than being
able to use the Recovery Console? I don't think I'll need the ability to
reinstall the OS without destroying my installed programs and date: I image
the system regularly.

Thanks again,

Dan S

How can the OP do that if he doesn't have the Windows XP CD-ROM to finish the
Setup process?

I was answering this part of the question:
"...other than being able to use the Recovery Console?"
