Can I install my old H/D in my new computer

The mother board went out in my computer, so I just bought a whole new
computer.
My problem is that the new computer already has Windows Vista installed and
I'm not sure if I can just install my old hard drive from my Windows XP
computer; I don't want to lose any of the files I had on the old hard drive.
What are my options?

Install Vista on the new computer, then attach the hard drive either as a
slave drive or in an external hard drive housing and copy over the files you
need. There is no safe way to do what you want to do.

Install the old drive to use the XP OS or just access the data on it? It is
unlikely it will boot, so installing it as a slave to access your data is
about the best you can hope for. Not to mention the licensing issues if this
is an OEM version of XP that shipped with the original PC.
