Can I delete the $ntuninstall$ files

Barbara

I have a lot of files under my Windows directory that start with
$ntuninstall$xxxxx. I believe these are the unstall files for service
packs and Windows Updates.
I've got all of them on backup tapes. Can I delete them without
creating a problem?
I have Windows XP Home Edition, SP2
Thanks :)

Hi Barbara,

The $NTUninstallKBxxxxxx$ or $NTUninstallQxxxxxx$ folders are backups
of
system files that were replaced when you installed various hotfixes.
If
your system is stable, and you don't need to remove the hotfixes,
these
folders can be removed. For an automated utility to clean up these
folders
and the associated Add/Remove Programs entries, see www.dougknox.com,
Win XP
Utilities, Remove Hotfix Backup Files.

That utility at www.dougknox.com, as noted will NOT work if SP2 is
installed.

If you have no expectation of wanting to delete the related hotfix you
can go ahead and delete them. Check what they relate to at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;xxxxx
