Can I change name to "Administrator"?

J

John O'Boyle

I've just attempted to upgrade a Win98 system to WinXP Pro. I ended up
with my name as the user, with administrative privildges. For
redundancy purposes among my three computers, I'd REALLY like the name
to BE "Administrator" as it is on the other two boxes. I tried to
"Rename" the user to "administrator" but it tells me there ALREADY IS a
use names "admistrator". And yet, there doesn't appear to be. Anyone
have any thoughts on how I can effect this change?

Thanks.

Please go to
Start\Run\Type "gpedit.msc"\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security
Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

In the item "Accounts: Rename administrator account", you can give the
administrator a new name. And then you will be able to create a new user
with the name Administrator.

There is a default account created named "Administrator." You will not see
folders for this account until after you log on to it. Also, this account
is normally hidden as it is intended as a reserve account for
troubleshooting purposes. To access the account in XP Pro, press
Ctrl+Alt+Del twice at the welcome screen and type in Administrator. Leave
password field blank since one has not been assigned yet.

You could rename this account and then rename your account to Administrator
but the names of the folders for the accounts will remain the same. User
name/with Administrator as the account's folder name and Administrator/some
other folder name. Confusing.

Since you have XP Pro... what you could do is use TweakUI for XP to force
the default Administrator account onto the welcome screen. Create a second
account in the Administrator group and then use TweakUI again to hide it
since you want it to take the place of the original Administrator account
and will save it for troubleshooting purposes.

Or you could leave things as they are and break away from your
Administrator-on-all-systems approach. Perhaps choose a different name on
these other computers - one that is not handled in a special way by the XP
operating system.

you rename the 'administrator' to 'administrator 1' then the system will
allow you to rename the user to 'administrator'.
