Can connect to network, not internet

Jake

My roommate has had a problem with his computer for the
last 3 weeks where he cannot connect to the internet, but
can connect to anyone's computer on our network just
fine. At first, we figured it was a virus or hijacker,
ran numerous programs, but came up empty handed. He's
running Windows XP SP2 with the newest version of
Internet Explorer. I've also tried different browsers to
see if it was only an IE problem, but same results. The
only thing that I can think of that would do this would
be a corrupt file, but Service Pack 2 was installed after
the problem initially occured. If anyone has any ideas
on what the problem is I'd really appreciate hearing
them. Thanks.

Same thing happened to me, and I was ready to format the
damned thing. But it was fixed by:

1. Running the "Network Setup Wizard" in the Connections
list.

2. Just click next until you get to the screen where
you're asked to "Select a connection method." Click on
the one where you have another PC as a gateway.

3. Set everything else.

This fixed my problem that I've been working on for a
whole day. Ironically simple. Tell me if it works for you.

Thanks for the idea, but I've already tried that.. and
about every other configuration. That would be the
correct setup though. We've had the current setup for
two weeks now, but like I said, his computer has been
down for three. We were previously through a wireless
dsl company that ended up being totally unreliable, and
now we have a cable setup. Everyone else's computers
have been working fine, and all have the same configs,
such as automatic ip, yada yada yada. I've even tried
connecting the cable modem directly to his computer, but
still no change. I just cannot figure out why his
computer can connect to everyone's computers, but not to
the internet.

Disconnect from any and all networks - unplug cables, unplug wireless
adapters (whichever applies).

Go to your Network connection properties and uninstall everything (make a
list first) on the 'This connection used the following items list'.
Reboot. Turn it off. Reboot. Now go back and reinstall all the items
you uninstalled. Turn off computer. Connect your network (cable,
wireless - whatever).
Turn on computer and let XP do it's thing.

How does the computer connect to the internet - when it does? Dial? Cable
modem? DSL? Wireless to a router then out?

Have you tried just the internet connection with the problem computer NOT
connected to any other network - straight out as a stand alone system?

Yeah, I'm a little frustrated too. Yes, I've tried
hooking his computer directly to the cable modem, but
continue to get the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" message.
I'm thinking that the next step is to tell him to just
back up whatever he needs off of it and reinstall
everything.

I had mentioned that his computer can connect to all
others via "My Network Places," showing that it can in
fact connect to the network, but it cannot access the
router via Internet Explorer. Is there a difference
between internet connectivity and network connectivity?

Can you be assured you do have an internet connection and that you are just
getting the page not found when using the browser.

Use the command prompt and try doing a ping to an known address and see if
you are indeed connected but just having browser problems.

Or not

Can you try a dial up connection (your account - or 'borrow' one for a
little bit) to see if THAT works. If it does, and your browser seems fine
there, at least we know the browser is ok.

I'm sure you've checked all the requisite TCP/IP IP, DNS. etc. stuff?
Dynamic? Static?

I pinged various sites, and got quick replies from each.
Right now I'm going through a bunch of the IE registry
stuff to look for suspicious entries.

If it's just the browser, however, why wouldn't it work
with other browsers like Mozilla Firefox?

It ended up being a corrupt winsock file. Runs good as
new. Thanks a lot for helping me everyone.

Try turning off the firewall and then trying to connect. If this works,
uninstall the firewall, and install another. For example, if you are using
Zone Alarm, uninstall it and install the Sygate Personal Firewall (free
edition). Both are equally as good as the other.
