Can anyone recommend a trustworthy registery service?

U

Uncle Joe

I registered my beloved *.com name through my hosting
service and it somehow wound up under the registry control
of a freaky woman in California. She and I have tussled
over it, and she re-exerted control of the domain. I've given
up and will try to register a few other domain choices.

I don't want to repeat this bad experience again. Can you
guys recommend a domain registry that is trustworthy and
will enable me as the registered user and admin contact?

As always, your input is appreciated.

Cheers.

I have chosen to stay with Network Solutions and not had any problems over the years.

If the problem can be shown to have been caused by a

Thanks, Murray. Dotser.com seems like a good service.
Only problem is that every name I tried is taken. Bummer.

Likewise, I've always had my domains with Network Solutions. They are a
known quantity and have established many good policies and procedures for
handling issues.

Hope this helps,

I hear ya Murray! I hate all the ads..but still think they are legit (the
company that is) I have never had any problems transferring into or out of,
domain name ownership issues, etc. but the ads...uggggh! I tell clients when
looking for a name..once they pick one and start to check out..for all the
rest that they may offer..Just say no!! (that's a catchy phrase isn't it?)

I've been in this since 1997, as early as anyone I suppose and I've learned
a lot the hard way.
If you take the time, you'll learn you are no alone, some insight may be
gained reading through the subject "FrontPage Soon to Be Orphaned By
Microsoft?" [1] noting the web has many testimonials to the rip-offs the
registrars have been able to pull off. Generally speaking, many of us have
been victimized somehow, continue to be victimized and unless in posession
of tens of thousands of dollars which will then be pissed away on slimey
lawyers and judges who will take the money and explain "sorry pal, no
guarantee" we will all continue to be victimized because quite frankly the
US has become a cesspool of filth and corruption and the laws have been
subverted to serve those that can buy them.

So that said, the quick answer to your question is none of the registrars
are trustworthy. Every one of them has tried to rip off customers, everyone
of them will try to rip you off one way or another and most if not all have
succeeded. Network Solutions Inc. has been especially problematic as this
[2] as well as many articles that can be found will convey. Not many know or
understand that NSI is deeply mired in the corrupt US government and its war
machine. They also control the database for all registrations.

I've been through several registrars and I settled with Register.com --
ONLY -- because they were the first to provide a well designed and manageble
web interface for managing the domains. That doesn't mean they aren't slime
as they too are in fact slime and they have ripped me off and have tried to
do so on two other occassions. I've also been victimized by a registrar than
took money out of my bank claiming I agreed to automatically renew which has
been one of the rip-off schemes the registrars have used to steal their way
to prosperity. It took me two months to get my money back and the banks are
good for sh!t as we as customers have no security or protections when
entrapped in the auto-withdrawal rackets.

The facts are what they are. When it comes to registrars you have to take
your chances and be very careful when doing business with any of them as
they hold all the cards given to them by a government and court system that
is subversive and corrupt.

But how do you really feel about registrars, Clinton? (Grin.)

As long as I live, I'll never understand how that registrar in CA
got her hooks into my domain name. She's just sitting on it. My
hosting service sent me a welcome letter showing that my
domain had been assigned to me. The next day, I learned
she "owned" it. Not fair. Took all the winds out my sails.
Others advised me to just forget that domain name, or pay
serious money to get it back.

Two days ago, I wrote her a "Dear Bitch" letter. Made me feel

I tried telling you the way it really is. Many of us have been through this
time and time again. In fact, I've been through the exact same experience
your having right now.

I used used whois to check the database at Network Solutions as they control
the central database for all registratrions and the domain name I wanted was
available. I also used whois to check the database of Register.com with whom
I intended to register the domain name. Again, available. So I registered
the domain with Register.com and paid with a credit card. Several days later
Register.com sent me mail stating they had refunded my purchase and could
not provide me with the domain after all. They offered me no explanation
only that 'a mistake has been made' and offered me a coupon discounting a
couple bucks for the purchase of another domain.

Several days later I learned Register.con (no spelling error) had turned the
domain over to a competitor who has been grabbing all the metromilwaukee
domains they can. I asked for proof that the competitor had regesitered
before me and Register.con refused. My only recourse would be throwing
thousands at a lawyer to 'inquire' as I was told.

What was your host? ... surely this is down to them.

TIP .. never never never use your host to register your domain.

http://namecheap.com .... very very very good service and a decent price
too. $8.88
If I've ever got a problem they are very helpful, and read your questions,
they don't just give stock answers. (something i really hate)

.... I don't know what keywords you want for your domain .. but if the name
you want is a phrase... seo wise (search engine optimisation) your better
off with dashes... it's 100% to own both versions of a domain name but if
you really want a particular name you comprimise.

Lets say you really wanted butterflynets.com check if butterfly-nets.com is
available ... (this is just an example to show what i mean)

My host was 2mhost.com. I'm going to dump them.

Their order entry forms specified a place for requested
domain name, so I filled it out. They said it was mine.
Their welcome letter showed my domain name at the top.
When I tried to transfer the domain to 2mhost.com's
servers, I couldn't do it because someone else owned
the domain and wouldn't give me the time of day. She
had the account number/password.

2mhost.com blamed the situation on me. Had I checked
a box for $8.00, they said the domain would have been
registered in my name. Overlooking the box proved
costly. This has been a nightmare. Every other
domain name I dream up has been taken.

I'l never trust another host to be completely on my
side. I wrote 2mhost's CEO, and he was cryptic
and blamed me not checking the domain box.

U

Uncle Joe

Thanks very much for your input, Clinton.
While I think I've been shafted, your sad
story is far more compelling.

Even if I register a domain name through
a registry service, I won't be comfortable
using the domain for a couple of weeks,
if then.

I wonder what domain mavens like the
woman who stole my domain name does
with them. A sympathetic tech support
guy gave me her account/password and
I went exploring. She not only had my
domain, she had eight other inactive
domains. I promptly transferred "my"
domain to my host's servers and changed the
password. The next day, whois showed
that my changed had gone through.

The day after that, she got control again,
pulled my domain back to her host's
servers, and changed my domain contact
data to her. I could never trust using it
again.

The only thing I can see is that she'd
auction the domains off, or sell them
to the highest bidder. It's nasty
business, as you know.

That's what I'm thinking, too. I did, however, check whois before
entering the domain name, and the domain showed as being
available. The moment I entered it in 2mhost's order entry
form, it began a slippery slope to registry corruption.

Am considering incorporating the name of my domain and registering it
as a service mark. Then have my attorney friend send her a demand
letter ordering her to relinquish the domain name. Probably way too
much trouble.

Perhaps it's time to conduct a contest for best available domain
suggestion. My purloined domain was "politicalblogs.com" which
was perfect for what I wanted to accomplish. I loved that domain.
Plan to drive a custom blog (don't like available designs) with
blog segments for White House, Supreme Court, Congress,
the 50 states, the District of Columbia, United Nations, Iraq,
and current affairs such as Katrina.

I'm ready to sign with another host. Have purchased over $120
dollars in PHP, MySQL, FrontPage 2003 Inside/Out books. All
I lack is a domain name that excites me. (Grin.)
