Perhaps I will try Avast since it is mentioned twice and no
problems were described. Any other suggestions?

Micro$oft Security Essential.

Would you trust an anti-virus program produced by the company who
wrote the operating system that needs it?

^1. Please stop snipping attributes.
1. What is AFAIK ?

As Far As I Know.
2. I indeed am wary about using a Microsoft product for security.

Seems only logical...
3. What does "snipping attributes" mean?

An attribute is: "babel17 wrote:" indicating who said the quoted
material. Man-wai Chang has the long-standing and annoying bad habit of
snipping (removing) them from replies, so a reader must look back
through the thread to see "who said that."
OH - okay - I thought "snipping" was something I was doing!

Why is that?
I never really thought that I had any problems with Zone Alarm

For one, because it is bloated and it is known to cause problems. I used
Free ZA myself until it caused problems with my home network.
Uninstalling ZA was the solution. I replaced it with Sygate Personal
Firewall and my problems were gone. (I now use Online Armor Free.) And
then there was that time when ZA f*cked after a Windows Update (and they
admitted it was their fault, not M$'s). Suddenly, ZA users couldn't go
online anymore.

That sounds about right. I tried to put ZA on a three computer network
at a different location. It prevented the network from operating. Now
I have only the windows incoming firewall on the computers.

Is Microsoft Security Essentials an AntiVirus alone or is it other
programs as well? In other words, would I have to uninstall ZoneAlarm or
any other program in order to use it?
Its installation program will prompt you to remove other AV, AS, and AM.
It doesn't do firewalling.

Can anyone recommend a Free AntiVirus program now that AVG Free 2011 is
malfunctioning on many (but not all) machines? They do not appear to be
able to fix the update problem and I need up-to-date protection.

Who would you recommend?

Windows XP.

Thanks !

I notice that Avast does not offer an option of when to run the daily
scan or the daily update.
Or maybe I just haven't found the control setting yet.
Or maybe it doesn't need t run a daily scan and updat4es when the update
is released.

He has been doing it (snipping attributes) for a very long time .. and
has been told about it repeatedly.

The focus should be the ideas, not names. :)

Conversing with you is like talking to the person in the next stall in
the men's room.

Well, I found the setting for scheduled scan and set it.
I had to turn off the spinning ball in the system tray - it was driving
me nuts.

It's a shame that AVG Free 2011 appears to have been brought out too
soon and that the problems haven't been addressed. 2011 is also
interfering with some types of e-mail. The work around appears to be to
uninstall then reinstall with the setup configured to NOT scan e-mail at
all.

I guess I'm an Avast fan now, after years with AVG.

When I read messages, my last attention is names. No one would get paid
talking here. Save the names for your internet banking stuff! :)

Avast already scans in realtime, all the time. Default auto-update is
set to 240 minutes (enough for me).

You persist, for no other reason than to annoy everyone but yourself.

All of the above? ;-)
Well my reply was yes, I do trust MS Essentials since I use it. However,
I have used the others mentioned and they are fine too. Telling a gal
she's pretty doesn't automatically imply all the other gals in the room
are ugly.

As far as snipping attributes, I'm afraid I too might be delinquent in
that area occasionally due to carelessness.
