Can a MOBO damage a CPU?

I have a MOBO and AMD (slot A) CPU that stopped working. Dead as a
doornail - no beeps-no raster.

I bought a new AMD Athlon (slot A) and am afraid to try it in the
MOBO, fearing that the MOBO might damage the new CPU.

Should I worry about that?

Thanks

It's possible but not very likely.
Generally when a (motherboard-CPU) combo stops working, when
it's one-or-the-other that has failed, it was the
motherboard alone that failed (ignoring gross error like
improper heatsink mounting or user overvoltage
(misconfiguration or overclocking), otherwise the CPU is
rarely the first failure point.).

Examine the motherboard for signs of any problem. Things
like overheated power supply mosfet that has slid down the
board and shorted across two power lines could cause damage,
but that is pretty rare. So, in theory installing the CPU
could cause damage, but in practice the odds are too small
to consider unless something looks obviously wrong.
