Hello all. I have not had this prioblem until today and can't figure out how to fix it or what's wrong with it. I have a Nikon Coolpix 775 and when I bought this new computer, last month, I didn't install any programs for my camera because the first time I plug it in by USB cable to my cpu, a window popped up with about 4-5 options asking what to do

So, I would just select transfer to computer or view & transfer(sorry, don't know the exact language), but whatever I did was extremely easy & useful. I've not had a problem with it until today

I just plugged my camera in with a USB cable & my computer made the little "ding-dong" sound letting me know it was plugged in. On the toolbar, it has a emblem that is named "Safely Remove Hardware" and the convient little Pop Up Camera & Scanner Wizard no longer pops up. Why is that and what can be done to resolve this issue?

Since the box no longer comes up asking me what to do, I can't transfer my pictures to the computer. I tried rebooting my computer thinking maybe that would help out, but it didn't. I tried to add my camera to the computer from within the Control Panel, but that didn't work as when I selected to transfer pictures, it said it couldn't detect the camera. If I select "Get pictures from a camera or scanner" from within my Pictures Folder in Explorer, it only listed my scanner as the only device.

I need help bad and would appreciate it if anybody can help me out with this as my wife just had a baby & we want to send pictures to family & friends by e-mail

THANKS a bunchs to any person(s) that is willing to help out!!

Maybe the following articles will offer some ideas:

Detect Removable Media or Digital Cameras

(814390) File Transfer from Digital Camera Fails

(317181) Cannot Transfer Images From
Your Nikon Digital Camera
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=317181

==============================================

Maybe some of the following info will
help you solve the problem. It seems
that what works for one user may not
work for another.

============================

Possible ways to restore AutoPlay:

I. Connect your camera to your computer,
power it on and make sure you have
pictures on your memory card.

II. Go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.
This will take a few seconds to run.

III. Read the following KB article:

(817357) The AutoPlay Function Does Not
Work and the Current Media Does Not Appear
in My Computer When You Insert a CD or DVD
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817357

Download the Microsoft
Autoplay Repair Wizard:
http://tinyurl.com/jt1h

Download the autofix.exe file to your
desktop. Once done, double click on
this file. A window will open. Follow the
directions on the screen.

Once done, turn off the camera and
reboot.

IV. Power the camera on, wait 10-15
seconds for XP to recognize it, you
should hear some beeping sound and
the window should now open giving
you the option of downloading photos
from the camera.

V. You may have to set the options for
this window. Click on My Computer,
your camera should be listed there
under Devices with Removable Storage.
Right click on it and click on Properties.
In the opening window, click on the
Autoplay tab and under Select, scroll to
Pictures to select it. Select the button...
Prompt me...

============================

Here is the previous fix.

Go this site:
http://tinyurl.com/7g4k

Fourth item from the top of the page. Two
fixes are presented. One is to edit the
registry, the second one is to download
Tweak UI and do the repair with it. If you
are comfortable editing the registry, go
ahead.

If not, download Tweak UI.
http://tinyurl.com/36n

Once you download Tweak UI file in one
of your folders, double click on it to install
it.

Once this is done, click on Start and click
on All Programs. Look for Power Toys for
Windows XP. Click on it and Tweak UI
will be listed. Click on it to get it started.

A window will open. Click on the + sign
next to My Computer, then click on the +
sign next to Autoplay. Then, click on Types.
Check the boxes for Autoplay Drive Types
and click OK.

============================

If all else fails...purchase a USB memory
card reader.

Good luck.

One last possibility:

In your camera setup menu...try
setting the USB mode to PTP.

You can still transfer pictures.
After you connect and you hear "ding-dong", open My
Computer and look under Devices with removable storage. Your camera will be
listed there with a drive letter (F, G, H etc.). Double click on it to open
it. You will see a folder, double click on it to open it, you will see
another folder, double click on it to open it and you will see your photo
files. Select all files and copy to a folder on your hard drive.

If you want to try to repair this Autoplay wizard you can try as given
below. It usually works.

Different ways to try to repair the Autoplay window for downloading from
either a camera or card reader. Also the same procedure can be used for a CD
drive Autoplay.

Go from steps I to V, although step V may not be needed.

I. Connect your camera to your computer, power it on and make sure you have
pictures on your memory card. Make sure your batteries are good or better
yet, use your AC adapter if your camera came with one. If you are trying
with a card reader, just connect it with a memory card inserted and with
pictures on the memory card.

Click on My Computer and look under Device with Removable storage. Your
camera will be listed there and a drive letter will be assigned to it
(something like H, G, etc.) You will use this drive letter in a step below.
If you do not see your camera listed there you will need to repair your USB
connection or you are on a network and the network drive is Z and XP cannot
assign a drive letter to your camera so you will need to take care of this
first. The steps below will not work if XP cannot assign a drive letter for
your camera.

II. Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press Enter
Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI...
This will take a few seconds to run.

III. Go to the following site:
http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/autofix.exe

and download the autofix.exe file in one of your folder. Once done, double
click on this file. A window will open. Follow the directions on the screen.

Once done, turn off the camera and reboot.

IV. Power the camera on, wait 10-15 seconds for XP to recognize it, you
should hear some beeping sound and the window should now open giving you the
option of downloading photos from the camera.

V. You may have to set the options for this window.
Click on My Computer, your camera should be listed there under Devices with
Removable Storage. Right click on it and click on Properties. In the opening
window, click on the Autoplay tab and under Select, scroll to Pictures to
select it. Select the button Prompt me... Do the same thing for a CD drive.

You can also download the autofix.exe file from the site below if the above
site is not available. At this Microsoft site, you have the option of
downloading the autofix.exe file and proceed as above, or, let Microsoft
scan your computer and try to repair everything. If you decide to use this
site and let Microsoft try the repair, run the REGS...command given above
before going to this site.

Thanks to both of you as I appreciate your insight on this. I ended up just downloading the Nikon View 6.2 program, but I am still going to look into what you both said. I really liked the easy feature XP had, when it was working automatically, for my camera.

Again, thanks for the help. I do appreciate it. Have a great night/day.

Sorry - tried the "autofix" suggested and no change. The
computer recognizes the "G" drive and I can right click
and autorun that way. But, for some odd reason, the
autoplay that used to work without any input from me does
not do so any longer. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

my coolpix 775 used to launch automatically, but no longer. I uninstalled and reinstalled it. It appears in the imaging devices. When I click on properties I noticed that the Location field had "Unknown" in it. It's as if the device has not been assigned a port. When I installed the camera it gave me the option of a port (COM or let wizard find the one I've plugged it into).I've looked in all the usb root hubs and the camera is nowhere to be found. I've downloaded nikonview - and that doesn't work either. I've downloaded drivers and still no luck. Very frustrating because up until last week, as soon as I connected the camera to one of the usb ports, Windows Imaging popped up. I'm on a pre-installed XP Home on a Dell 2350 PC. Am at my wits end. Do I go out and buy a card reader? Throw away the Nikon coolpix and get yet another digital camera? By the way, my husband on XP Professional on his Sony laptop has no problem - the camera wizard/WIA launches straight away (at the moment anyway)
I've looked at every troubleshooting/support forum there is - seems quite a few people have had the same problem. One person found that after a short power outage - his camera wizard suddenly came back to life. He suggested just unplugging the PC (as if there was a power outage) - which I did - but my PC wasn't fooled by that one! I'm no PC expert and don't want to start messing with the registry etc...
