camera not recognized by xp

I've got a Nikon Coolpix 3100 camera. For some reason, when I connect it to my computer's USB port, XP no longer recognizes that it's a camera, and doesn't pop up the "auto - do you want to download, view etc. these pictures" window. Instead, it just recognizes it as an external drive, and shows me what's on there. So I can get the pictures, by copying them over etc. etc. but I'd like XP to recognize the camera and give me the auto-download option like it used to. I uninstalled the camera software and reinstalled it, but no change. Anyone seen a similar problem or know how to correct it? Thanks!

Try plugging it in to a different USB port-- if you have to swap ports with
another device, do it. The computer may detect the camera again as it did
in the past.
