Calypso 3.3 - archived HTML emails are blank

N

Nevans

I have been using the free 3.3 release of the Calypso email client since
this past summer. In late 2003, I needed to restore my system from a
backup and created a Calypso .txt archive of all the emails I had
received since the backup had been made, so I could import them into
Calypso after restoring my system.

Before actually restoring my system, I looked in the archive and
discovered that all of the archived HTML emails were blank. What I
ended up having to do was forward the HTML emails to myself and download
them into Calypso after I restored my system. This really isn't a good
solution since you lose the original sender and date in the headers when
you do things this way.

In planning for the likelihood that I'll have to restore from backup
again at some point, I have been trying to find out if there is a way to
get Calypso 3.3 to correctly archive HTML emails. I have already
searched the Calypso group on Yahoo as well as searched via
Google/Google Groups but haven't found an answer as of yet. Does anyone
know if there is a way to get Calypso to correctly archive HTML emails?

Thanks for your help,
Nevans

Hi Nevans. I've also used Calypso 3.3 for a long time and so far have had
no problems in archiving or recovering(importing) emails. Are you
archiving complete email folders or individual emails within one or more
folders or the entire mail box? I've tested all these procedures and all
seems to work well on my system. If I knew the process you went thru I
might be able to suggest something. Any more details available?

Good luck.

Bob.

Bob. Thanks for helping. I choose Messages>Search>All Folders looking
for all messages created on or after the date of my last backup that
have a space in either the header or the body. Then I select all the
messages in the Search Results folder, right-click and select "Save to
archive". I save the archive to C:\My Documents\xxxxxxxx.txt.

I just did this for all messages received on or after 2/6/04, saved the
archive as feb6test.txt and then imported the archive. In this
instance, the HTML emails showed up OK and I think I know why. When the
archive is saved to My Documents, all of the HTML and other attachements
are saved to C:\My Documents\Attachments and Calypso must be decoding
from there?

Does this mean that when I do my recovery operation in the future, I'll
need to copy both the .txt archive file and the contents of the
Attachments folder to diskette (or wherever) prior to restoring my
system and then copy them to My Documents before importing back into
Calypso? (Previously, I only saved/used a copy of the .txt archive
file.) If so, will I have to permanently retain the attachments in the
Attachments folder in order to be able to view the emails at a later
date?

I think you are right Nevans. Not only the text files have to be saved
but the 'Attachments' sub folder with its contents has to be saved and
kept as a sub folder of the folder used for the archives. That's where
Calypso will look for the attachments (if any) for each email in the text
file. Calypso also saves any images in the same 'Attachments' folder.
Each email in the saved text file has a reference to its attachments
pointing to where the attachments are located.

example: X-CalypsoHtmlBody: ".\Attachments\Message-0007D800.htm";
"Message.htm".

When you restore, Calypso puts the emails along with any attachments in
the folder you designate.

Good luck.

Hi again Nevans. Forgot to say that if there are any images for the
attachments they will be saved in a separate folder(called _files) within
the 'Attachments' folder so that folder will also have to be saved. Hope
I didn't confuse things too much.

Good luck.

Bob. Everything is clear now. I really appreciate the help because I
want to keep using Calypso but was going to look for some other client
if Calypso couldn't handle this HTML archive issue.

Thanks for all your help. You didn't confuse things at all.

Your welcome. I also like Calypso and plan on driving it until the wheels
fall off.
