Thats already been done. On the 4th or 5th edit of my post ;)
I'd break up the formula into separate cells (perhaps in hidden
columns); it will make understanding and editing easier in future.

Yes, I found myself forced to do this. I had no chance of understanding
it all in once. I have a workbook with this divided into parts.
Also I think a VBA function might be a better solution.

I wouldnt know. Could you please elaborate and maybe paste a couple of
links?

Hi roandr!

Can you provide a complete schedule with the rates and periods they
apply to? That should make it easier.

The UDF won't be easier than your formula but it will be easier to
reproduce elsewhere.
