C00D1199 error when trying to play WMV on Vista; works fine on XP

Hello.
I installed Vista Ultimate 32 bit edition and having trouble playing my
collection of WMV files that work perfectly fine under Windows XP
Mediaplayer 11. Double-clicking any of my .wmv files causes an C00D1199
error (displayed in a browser after clicking the Help button of the error
dialog). Am I missing any codecs on Vista that are available on XP? The
files are unprotected and work fine on any XP machine I tried playing them.

I had problems with my old .wmv files from my XP machine that were created by
software other than Movie Maker. WMP11 either wouldn't play them or would
hang up on fast forward. I spent a couple hours trying to get a Microsoft fix
with no luck.
Solution? Download GOM player http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html and use
that to view those old files. It's freeware. Bye-bye problem.

Changing around problems may ignore problems in the source content, though.
If it should work: why doesn't it work? If it's a bug in Windows, you would
probably want it fixed. If it's a bug in the content or encoding, maybe
that tool can also be fixed. =)

Peter, is there a sample clip showing this problem that I can take a look
at? A URL would be very helpful.

You could try (not guaranteed to work):

Right click on the Speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar and
select Playback Devices. In the Playback window, highlight Speakers and press
the Properties button. On the Enhancements tab, CHECK the "Disable All
Enhancement" checkbox. Press Apply. Press OK.

This worked for me when I got the same error. Solved by updating my audio
device drivers.

I respectively disagree with zachd on this. I've wasted hours trying to fix
this problem of WMP 11 not playing some of my old wmv files (these are Video
files). I tried downloading and updating codecs, video drivers, more updates,
System Restore, etc. This problem with WMP 11 came right out of the box. In
other words, the software or computer wasn't doing the job right from the
get-go. To save time and frustrating hours with tech support, I think that it
is a legitimate and efficient move to use software that works on some
applications and not use software that doesn't work. Jusr because WMP 11 is
free, doesn't mean that we have to use it. Not if it has bugs and quirks. My
WMP 11 works with 95% of my video and audio files. For those video files that
don't work properly with WMP 11, I use GOM player, which is a great freeware
device that plays 98% of all my video files and DVD's.

As a former engineer and now working in marketing and sales, I frequently
see the disconnect between engineering/tech staff and the end user. Many
engineers and techs who enjoy spending hours of trying to fix
software/firmware bugs lose sight that many consumers just want to turn on
the computer and use the software as was promised by the original developers,
in this case, Microsoft.

Again, I suggest that if you want to get to view those video filews that WMP
11 can't, download GOM player. It's free and it works.

We're not disagreeing at all in any way. You're trying to make things work
for you right now (short-term focus) whereas I'm trying to make sure things
work for everyone (long-term focus).

If you're ignoring the cry from the developer to please for the love of Pete
provide details about the problem that show how to reproduce or track down
the problem, that's a disservice to the community. So as regards this:

Yeah, I'm on that page. My goal is that It Just Works. Tracking down the
specifics of content that "won't work" is CRITICAL. I'm not as psychic as
you may have been led to believe. =)

So: do you have a pointer to WMV files that don't work in WMP11? That'd be
really useful data. =D

What's amazing is that the newest Zune PC software is
really cool. I read that the Zune team started over and
no longer uses WMP 11 as the base code.... I don't blame them,
I really dislike WMP 11. The Zune software also comes with
codecs that WMP 11 does not. You don't have to have a Zune
to use the software. Perhaps, you should try it.
