Hi I have a computer that keeps rebooting and gives the following error:

c0000218 registry file failure. cannot load the hive
file\systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or its alternate

it is corrupt, absent or notwritable



I'm assuming I may need to reinstall Windos XP. Any advice first?

try a repair installation which may prevent you from having to back
everything up, as it does not delete all your files. see this link for
advice.....
