C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications

I get this when trying to run a patch for a scanner driver. Clicking close
or ignore has no effect and the program doesn't run. I found a fix in the KB
but it was for XP Server.
What is the fix for XP Home?

Thanks.

Hi,

Your autoexec.nt problem is most likely caused by a worm or if you have
WinXP SP2 and AVAST (antivirus software) installed, it also can cause
this error.

To solve the problem:

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

Alternatively:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt/config.nt by
copying a backup copy held in %windir%\repair\ to %windir%\system32\
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows) instead of using the procedure in
the KB article above (see further down for instructions on how).

Could be caused a trojan or something similar, e.g.
TrojanDownloader.Win32.Dia.a, more about this here:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

If you want to copy the file from the repair folder, you can use
this procedure:

Open a command prompt, using e.g. Start/Run --> cmd.exe

In the command prompt, type in the following two commands exactly as
you see them in this post (you need to press enter for each command
to execute them):

cd /d %windir%
copy repair\autoexec.nt system32\*.*

Here is a "screen dump" from how it looks when I do it on my computer:

Thanks to everyone for your prompt replies. I had to copy the files from
\repair in the end. That did the trick.

Thanks again.

I am having the same problem with my WindowsXP Pro version. Can't reinstall
programs for I'm getting the same message. My sole copy of that file is in
the Windows/Repair folder.

Trying to locate the autoexec.bat file was fruitless -- can't find it on the
drive even though my search included hidden files. Don't want to reinstall
Windows for it buries everything so I spend months rebuilding my
file/directory structure.

If anyone has the answer to this problem, sure would appreciate the post.

Thanks,

i had a similar problem on a few machines at work; problem didn't occur
again after cleaning spyware
when the file disappears, it affect the execution of 16-bit applications

and no, there is no autoexec.bat or config.sys under xp
if the file exists on the root, it is 0 bytes and is not used by the os
