C Prompt

How do I get a C:> prompt to install a bios flash with Windows XP? I have
done it a number of times with Windows 9x but can't get a true DOS prompt in
XP. I have tried the installation CD in the Repair mode but the system loads
the Windows drivers.

Don't you have to copy the BIOS flash to a floppy and boot from that?

You do copy the flash utility and the bios flash to a floppy but you have to
get a C:> prompt in order to install them. Can't seem to get a prompt
without windows drivers installed.

oh right. All the BIOS updates I've done are installed automatically when
you boot from the floppy.

You need to create an MS-DOS boot diskette and then just copy the "flash"
utility, followed by the BIOS .bin file. You can never get a pure DOS C:>
anymore because XP has no DOS. It uses a DOS emulator within a Windows but
that is no good for BIOS flashing.

Can you recommend a sight where I can download/make a MSDOS boot disk
compatable with XP?

Make a basic boot floppy - in My Computer, r-click the drive, take
Format and check the 'MSDOS Startup disk' box.

Add the flash program and its data file to the floppy, then boot it to
run the flash program. As basic points - always start with a backup of
the present BIOS and if there is the slightest indication it failed, run
the program again (DO NOT reboot) to put the original one back
