My sound was working fine on win xp home sp1 until I upgraded to win xp home
sp2.

The device driver shows it is installed and working. I installed the driver
for the audio from the motherboard disc.

But I still don't get any sound.
Motherboard: Asrock 775VM800, P4M800 chipset
sound device: c-media ac 97, in the audio properties of this device, it says
c-media WDM audio device and that it is working fine. The model # of sound
device is CMI 9761.

I could not find the driver on driverguide.com.
Still no sound.

yes, i did. I just downloaded an audio driver but it didn't work. Should I
also download a new bios if there is one?

Don't try to reflash the bios...

try uninstalling the device then reinstalling it with the latest drivers

btw: have aw check in the bios to be sure that on-board sound had not been
disabled

Oh

that was just a typo I meant to write to have a look in the bios

while the computer is booting up you should see a message such as "hit
<del> to run setup"

then be sure that on-board sound did not get disabled

Hi, Ok. I checked the bios. It was set to "auto" so I set it to "enabled".

I'm not sure if I need to update the audio codec too. It's supposed to be
cmi9761A. But the device manager says the audio codec is "standard system
devices". The south bridge is a VT8237R. I found a file that didn't have the
"R" on it. But that driver didn't work.

Well I'd still try uninstalling the device
then reinstall...

otherwise...set it to "disable" in the bios
and adda PCI sound card
