C$ Access

Guest

Greetings,

I'm trying to access \\COMP-NAME\C$ in a workgroup design with XP on both
machines without explicitly sharing the C drive on the COMP-NAME machine
since it's shared as C$ by default, it gives me a username/password dialog
box with the username set as COMP-NAM\Guest and shaded !! i can't change it..
and I don't know what password to put there!

Can somebody kindly explain?

Thanks and regards.

On the computer named COMP-NAME, enable the Guest account for network
access by typing this command in the Start | Run box:

net user guest /active:yes

Ahamami,

Is the server (COMP-NAME) running XP Home or Pro? You can't access the C$ share
on XP Home. For XP Pro, you need to disable Simple File Sharing, and enable a
non-Guest account.

Steve,

Doesn't the C$ share require administrative access?

You're probably right, Chuck. If so, "ahamami" needs to disable
simple file sharing on COMP-NAME and create matching administrator
accounts (same user name and password) on both computers.
