Hi, would it be feasible for someone to answer these few questions for
me please, I'm interested in buying the following components, MSI K8N
Neo Platinum nForce3 250 (Socket 754) Motherboard, x2 Crucial 512MB
DDR PC3200 CAS3 (CT6464Z40B), AMD Athlon 64 3000 Newcastle 130nm
(Socket 754), Connect3D ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI
(AGP). Now I was wondering if this set-up would run without error or
configuration problems, also would this hardware set-up run Doom 3 /
Half-life 2 and the next generation of games?

I'd probably avoid the MSI mainboard. I've had problems, and they are always
lacking features that are available on comparable boards.

Video cards is a bit on the old side as far as cutting edge goes, but should
do OK.

If you can go to CAS2 or CAS2.5 you might get a small performance increase -
especially if you plan to overclock at all.

Don't forget to consider your CPU cooler as well!

Sure. Surprised the 9800 Pro stands up as well as it did. I had the
9800 and it seemed a little pokey when I had it in my 3200 barton
nforce2 system. Not slow but not exactly super fast either. I have the
800XL now.

If you can get it close in price Id get the 6600 GT insrtead its a tad
faster if you look at the charts in most games or a 6800 non GT.

Some have posted prices in the 130-160 range for them. If you aleady
have the 9800 pro or can get it way below that then Id get the 9800.

The 6800 might be the best deal its close to the 6600 gt in stock form
but many are unlocking the pipes sucessfully with software (meaning no
artifacts and other problems) and then its better in the higher res
settings. I bought one back in Dec a PNY and there were no problems
unlocking it. Funny thing at the time everyone was bashing it -- the
PNY one guy posted he had a capacitor that fell off his new card and
there was general bashing of PNY quality then. But now I hear they are
pretty good , they can unlock the pipes on them , on most of the cards
or so some posters have said. Mine was like that.

You can check the charts here

They are using an AMD 4000 in this setup though and a

What do you mean by "unlocking the pipes". Some pixel pipelines artificially
turned off?

Yeah. I think it was Rivatuner that was used to turn them on. I only
did it once a while ago. I think the story goes the 6800 gt has more
pipes more expensive card. Theoretically the ones where the pipes dont
all work right when they are turned on get made into 6800s. But like
the 2500 bartons and 3200 bartons --- I assume the yields go up , they
make more and more good ones and they end up just shutting the pipes
off. The 6800 though has a lower clock speed etc so its not exactly
the same as the 6800 gt with all the pipes on but you can try OCing
too. Maybe that area has improved too since I see so many posts
claiming that you can make them into GTs but that wasnt the case
before when I looked. The mem etc was different and I dont think
people were OCing to the point it was a 6800gt but it was still a
great deal especially now since the prices are sometimes as low as
150-160. The weird thing was Compusa had them for $200 briefly way
back last yr for Thanksgiving and it wasnt that cheap for a long time
after that. Anyway some people do try to unlock the pipes and get
artifacts though.

Personally,I'd go with a Socket 939 mb,the 754 is on it's way out.Your
options for upgrading down the road would be much better with the 939.Might
consider a faster CPU if future games are a factor,perhaps a 3500+,prices
should start dropping soon on single core AMD's with the new dual core 64's
coming out.

Could you please let us know what problems you have experienced with
what models of the MSI motherboards and what features are lacking on
what comparable boards.

I have the MSI 865GVM2-LS Socket 478 motherboard with a 2.4 GHz
Celeron D and 512MB CL3 DDR400 SDRAM. The machine is set up as an
Internet SOHO computer.

Everything works as advertised. I can't think of another feature I
need. But maybe I am missing something.

Individualism is a political and social philosophy that emphasizes
individual liberty, belief in the primary importance of the individual
and in the virtues of self-reliance and personal independence. It
embraces opposition to authority and to all manner of controls over the
individual, especially when exercised by the state or society. It is
thus directly opposed to collectivism.

Hey,
I would recommend getting a Asus motherboard (A8N-SLI premium) with the
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 1GHz FSB 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual
Core Processor, and with the ram that you suggested, the combination is
sick. Like someone mentioned the single core processors are on their
way out. Now for you graphic card I would go with the Ati Radeon x800
pro it is better that the xl version and i think that it is better than
the nvidia 6800gt. I said that because I personally have a x800 pro and
this card is amazing. If you put together a system like this your going
to need a solid case and cooling system.
