Buying a New Computer

I am looking for a new computer that works quietly. I have owned a Compaq
and a Cicero computer in the past and I think they are very noisy. Which
brand of desktops works most quietly? or are they just all the same? thanks

Most commercial PC's are not designed for quiet/cool operation.
There are a number of cases & cooling options that can give you
what you want. Your best option would be to contact a local PC
shop and get a customized system. Just ask them to get you a PC
case designed for noise dampening and with quiet fans. Even now
most Brand-Name PC's do not come with an Intake and Exhaust
fans, but depend on the exhaust fan of the power supply.

You should have a computer Custom Built. You get more for your money and you
will have a mchine that is upgradeable. Most of the name brand computers are
not too much upgradeable and usually have crappy or onboard video and sound.

I have a 6 month old HP a250n running WXP-Home. It's as silent as you can
get any computer. My husband's custom PC sounds like a meat grinder/cement
mixer combined.

My older HP makes a slight humming noise.

there are hard drives and power supplies/fans that are
made to be very quiet, those are the two items that seem
to cause noise in the tower, when you look make sure you
buy a very quiet hard drive and power supply/fans that
are built to be especially quiet.

Look for a custom job with water-cooling, almost silent.

Dell desktops are amazingly quiet. Mind you, I'm not saying they are the
best choice for you because you didn't say what you want to *do* with
your new machine. However, I and other techs have remarked on how quiet
the Dell desktops are.

Dell, at least on the ones I've open up, don't have a fan on
the CPU heatsink. They have a duct that covers the heatsink
and directs air-flow to a large slow turning fan on the rear
panel.
