I keep making coasters. If I intentionally slow down the burn speed,
it seems to do better. But it still frequently fails, like maybe 3/4
of the time. Sometimes the disk sort of works, but has a few bad
spots. Like if I burn a CD full with a lot of MP3s, maybe three or
four are corrupt. Sometimes you can't read the disk at all. I've
tried several brands of blanks. It seems happier burning DVDs. About
half the time, it fails and leaves my drive locked with the lights
flashing. Rebooting doesn't get it to eject. A hard shutdown clears
it up. If I put a paperclip through the hole in the front of the drive
and eject the disk, it accepts a new blank when I close it again. And
it seems to burn ok, nero reports no errors. But in this case it
always makes a bad disk.

Oh, and one other thing. The machine won't boot to the hard drive
unless I have a bootable cdrom in the drive. I get the press any key to
boot to the cdrom message, then I do nothing, then it boots to the hard
drive just fine. If I don't have the bootable disk in the drive, it
locks and never boots xp. Maybe this is related, maybe not.

I suspect the drive is just junk. I'll try to swap it for another
drive tonight. Any other ideas?

The PC should look for bootable CD media, not find any (nothing in the DVD
drive), and continue on to the hard drive. Should take less than a second.
This is a bios function. It may be related to the DVD drive itself as the
problem, or the ribbon cable, or ide crosstalk.
