Burn photos to DVD for HDTV display?

I'm considering the purchase of a 42" 16:9 HDTV palsma display with a 1024x1024 pixel screen. I would like to burn photos to a DVD and display them in the highest 'progesssive scan' resolution possible. Although I already own a progressive scan DVD player that can handle JPG images, and I already know how to save digital photos in JPG format with a height of 1024 pixels, I don't know what else I should do. Can still images take advanyage of progressive scan DVD players and displays? Must I compress the pixel width of the image 9/16 so that it will display properly when displayed on a screen that uses rectangular pixels instead of square pixels, and if so, how is it possible that this step isn't needed with pre-recorded movies?

If you are ready to spend kilobucks on a plasma hdtv, you are ready to
do some basic research into the technology. Google: plasma hdtv basics.
