bunch of icons - top left of desktop

Hello,
I was looking for my recycling bin and I found that on the top left of
my desktop, there are quite a lot of icons piling up one on top of the
other. What would cause this? My recycling bin seems to be in that. How
can I separate them?

Thanks for your help.

Check the following;

Right click an open spot on your Desktop and select Properties
from the menu.
In Display Properties, click on the Appearance tab.
On the Appearance page, click on the Advanced button.
On the Advanced Appearance page, click on the down arrow next
to the Item box.
Scroll down to Icon Spacing (Vertical).
The default setting in the Size box is 43.
If it's set to 0 you will see icons squeezed together.

Good luck

Thank you both for your suggestions. This does not seem to be helping.

How many icons can we put on the desktop? Is there a limit?

Thanks

How many icons can we put on the desktop? Is there a limit?

Theoretically 4,294,967,295.

If you have Align to Grid enabled, the limit is what can be displayed. Your
screen size, screen resolution, icon size and icon spacing determine this.
Icons that are not displayed are still there, they just cannot be seen
unless you open %userprofile%\Desktop and/or %allusersprofile%\Desktop.

My Desktop can display 13 columns X 9 rows. Or 117 icons.

If I place 118 icons on my Desktop I still can only see 117 of them. The
other one will still show up in %userprofile%\Desktop or
%allusersprofile%\Desktop.

The Desktop you see is a combination of two folders.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
or
%allusersprofile%\Desktop
AND
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Desktop
or
%userprofile%\Desktop

All Users Desktop: Refers to the desktop common for all the users.

User Desktop: Refers to the desktop of that user.

That doesn't leave much for the operating system files...

LOL I didn't want to do any math, that's why I put Theoretically in front
of the number.
