Bullets in a text box

K

PowerPoint 2002. Often when I create a text box, input text then go back to
bulletize it will only give the first line a bullet - regardless of which
line my curser is on. Why does it do this and how do I fix it? I've tried
cutting and pasting into a new box but it does the same thing.

Thanks.

Ah, man, this one is hard because "manual" textboxes really don't do bullets
well. You really need to use a placeholder for this.

If you don't want to use an actual placeholder for whatever reason, then
type a character in a placeholder and make a copy of it. It should "hold"
the bullets. (You have to add one character before copying the placeholder,
otherwise it disappears after you copy it but before you can get your cursor
in it to type.)

Another option is to use RnR Shape Styles. I'll be honest, though, I'm not
sure how it does with multiple levels of bullets. (I rarely need to use it
for that. I use it mostly for references--it lets me apply formatting
without stripping existing italicization on the journal names.) But there is
a demo available, so you can check it out at no cost.

It figures there isn't an easy fix! By placeholder you mean slide layout?

Yeah, kinda. A placeholder is the thing that says "click to add title" or
"click to add text." If you look at the slide layouts, most of them have at
least one placeholder. Generally, Title and Text (the typical bulleted slide
layout) is what you'd use. (I don't think the title placeholders will be
very helpful to you in your situation.)

Thank you! Layout was the fix I was going to use if all else failed. For the
heck of it I downloaded a demo of the RnR Shapes Styles but that didn't fix
it either.

I appreciate the effort.

You're welcome.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you don't want to use the placeholders
as placeholders? If you format your slide master appropriately, they can
really save you a ton of time -- and help maintain the consistency of your
presentation in general.
