Building debug and release?

I'm using VS 2k3. I have built debug versions of projects and now want
to build release versions. The IDE is only letting me build one or the
other. If I build a release version, it removes the debug version.
This breaks references in other projects. Is there a way to keep it
from removing the version I'm not building?

It shouldn't remove the version you're not building, unless you've
configured your project to build both versions to the same folder. By
default they build to Debug and Release versions underneath the bin
folder, but you can change that.

I now prefer to build both versions to the same folder, as it seems to
be the only way to have other projects build with the correct version
(Debug or Release), since I've never found a way using 2003 to specify
different References for the two builds.

If you set a reference in your projects to the other projects in your
solution by choosing the Projects tab in the Add Reference dialog, you should
get the appropriate behavior. Each project will get the current build
version of the referenced project.

The problem is "any" project will build either a debug or release but
not both. You build one and it takes the other away.

Bruce, how are you building a debug and release to the same folder if
the assemblies are named the same. They would overwrite each other.
