Bug in Word 2000?

Came across a strange anomaly in Word 2000 today. Editing a document with
lots of spurious spaces before paragraph marks, revealed by toggling on
paragraph and space marks.

If I set up Find for these, Word does correctly find each one and I can
manually edit. But if I set up Find and Replace to automate it, Word no
longer finds them, although it is exactly the same in the Find section.
(Yes, I did try when I hadn't already edited them all!)

Bug? Any other similar experiences?

Sounds very much like the file was originally created in a different
program, then converted to a Word doc. Or opened in Word. These would
probably be characters associated with a "new line" in that other program
that Word is unsure how to deal with.
