Buffalo Terastation - DIY equivilent?

L

luke

I'm interested in a 1TB Buffalo terastation as I need NAS of around 750GB.
However, what DIY alternatives are they? I do have a spare PC to hand (a64,
S-ATA RAID MSI board) but like the simplicity of the terastation. I would
consider the DIY route if it would save alot of money?

Save a lot of money? That usually requires an _old_ PC. You
_definitely_ don't need any where near an a64 for a quick home NAS.

Regardless there are loads of ways to DIY. Do you want:

Windows?

On a flash card?
http://www.open-e.com/
http://www.rebyte.com/ (out of business)

Linux Distros?
http://www.openfiler.com/about/
http://nas.darma.com/

Linux on a CDROM?
http://www.serverelements.com/naslite-plus.php
http://www.freenas.org/

and I'm leaving out a bunch ...

No it doesnt, all it needs is a spare PC, ****wit.

Irrelevant to what he happens to have on hand which will work fine.

Pathetic, really.

I guess you don't know how money works. The overall price tag of his
a64 box + the time expenditure is quite expensive as far as DIY NAS
boxes go.
Irrelevant to what he happens to have on hand which will work fine.

Work fine? Actually it's overkill.

The project represents a savings over buying a NAS _in_addition_ to
keeping an a64 that he doesn't seem to use (providing that he places
no value on his time). However that's still not necessarily the
cheapest way to go.

If that's what he want's to do, though, I have no problem with it.
Clearly you're baiting here is another desperate attempt to recoup all
that you lost in your recent public humiliations.

Guess again, I'm rolling in it because I understand that very well indeed,
thanks.

**** all in fact.

Thanks for that completely superfluous proof that you have
never ever had a ****ing clue about anything at all, ever.

You have always been, and always will be completely and utterly
irrlevant. What you might or might not have a problem with in spades.

1TB box is about 710$. 4 HDs are about 340$. That leaves about 370$ for PC.
Yes, you can build Linux based server for less than 370$ excluding hard
drives.
If you are an enthusiast and have enough of knowledge (and/or time)....
I don't know if you qualify, though.

Rod,

Since you apparently have as much money as Uncle Scrooge, why don't
you take just a small percentage of it and BUY yourself a house in a
nice place far, far, far away from civilization. In particular,
without an Internet connection.

And take a bit more of that money and buy a second house. That's for
the full-time staff to supervise you and make sure you take all your
medications. And to house all the people who will do group therapy
with you so you work out your not-so-latent aggressive tendencies and
rage against all those who aren't you.

Go ahead. It's only money. And you have lots and lots of it. You
said so yourself.

Did that more than 30 years ago now thanks.

Or more strictly I built it myself.

I have to say, that sounds incredibly appealing, actually.

So long as I have my harem, endless supply of refrigerated beverages, my
guitar, loads of books, and a fishing rod. (Would have to be on the
coast, of course.) And air conditioning - because it would be a
tropical climate.

Oh - and the helipad. For the Bell Ranger. For the occasional trip to
town.

No more Folkie. Bliss....

I wouldnt voluntarily have not net connection anymore,
and wouldnt voluntarily have just dialup either.

Its just so useful for almost everything, banking, data,
entertainment, etc etc etc that I'd never do without it
any more than I would electricity either now.

I'd just use a tactical nuke to fry ****nert for a bit of light relief.

Rather like you lot did with firestorm bombing when
the krauts got too big for their boots the last time.
