BSOD -- Since KB940510

Some strange things have happened since I installed this. Shortly after I
got a freeze and had do do a disruptive shutdown. The Windows system log
said that fairly close together my optical drive and an external eSATA drive
had "disappeared". They both run through a JMicron chip on my MB but this
was not highlighted in the log.
This morning i got a got a BSOD -- I have the minidump file but not the
expertise to do anything with it.
Is KB940510 to blame or something else -- if my MB is dying it would be the
second time and I would take ECS off my Christmas list.
Any suggestions please?

I looked at the link but don't see how this helps.
I don't yet have Vista SP1 and have not made any changes to ECS software
since I got the PC with Vista Ultimate installed in March 2007. I have all
updates since then.
Or are you saying there has been an instability lurking there for a year
which will be fixed by SP1? If so, it's a long time for it to have been
allowed to remain.
Regards.

I just tried system restore to the day prior to this update. The screen
showed that it was processing something, then a beep and msg that it had
failed. It suggested I might try again using different restore point and
told me to visit support.
