BSOD...Please help !!!

R

Ratan Maitra

Hello..

I am now frequently being presented with the dreaded BSOD in the middle of
doing anything (surfing/icq/yahoo/downloading ..with no particular
pattern)...though I have not changed/installed any thing new recently.

At the bottom of the screen the following Techincal Information is given:

*** STOP : 0 x 0000008E (0 x 80000003, 0 x F9D2DCEA, 0 x F7DBA7B8 ( or 0 x
EEB8A7B8 ), 0 x 00000000 )
*** ENO Sys - Address F9D2DCEA base at F9D2C000, Date Stamp 3efc3df6

I am directed to contact my system administrator ( I am yet to appoint
him/her !!!) or techinal support group, that is YOU ALL, for further
assistance.

Please decipher all these mumbo-jumbo and help.

Thanks a lot

Hi

Try the following link to MVP Jim Eshelman's web page:

"0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"

Ratan -
With the information given here I am unable to determine
what may be wrong... but I can give some helpful advice.
It is very importaant to remember that this is in no way
a Microsoft Technical Support group. Just many users,
among them some MS-MVP volunteers, who give of their time
to help others who are having problems. So, anyone who
comes here with a chip on their shoulder, or demanding
someone's help... will probably be ignored. Ask nicely,
and you may be pleasantly surprised all all who respond.
Good Luck - t.o.m -------------------------------------

....this is to add that in subsequent BSOD screens, only the third figure
within parenthesis against STOP keeps changing...
I have already mentioned 0 x F7DBA7B8 ( or 0 x EEB8A7B8 )..or 0 x EF1977F4
etc etc

Does that give any clue??

I don't think that he intended it to be demanding. He did say please (a few
times). :)

Posted 'as is'. If there are any spelling and/or grammar mistakes, they
were a direct result of my fingers and brain not being synchronized or my
lack of caffeine.

Ohh... I am so sorry to be misunderstood...I meant absolutely no disrespect
to any one at all...what-so-ever....
I have benefited immensely by the time and effort of many persons in this
group...specially MS-MVPs, who I know do an honorable job of helping
others, specially those who don't have recourse to any other help source,
like me ....
...and I wanted to mean that only by capitalising "you all"..

Anyway, if I did hurt anybody's feelings inadvertently...I tender my sincere
apology and confirm once again that I carry no chip on my shoulders nor am I
foolish enough to "demand" help...It was just a manner of requesting for
help ..saying that this group is my only "Technical Support"...knowing fully
well that Microsoft is not involved...

Thanks OldMan

I would hazard a guess that you have a driver that is not updated. Check all the manufactures sites of your hardware and make sure you have the latest drivers available. This goes for everything. Mouse\keyboard\monitor\mobo\chipset\video card\sound card\modem\ethernet card and so on. Good luck. {:~)

Already cleaned your system of spyware and all trojans/viruses/worms and
have already disabled all un-needed background apps?

Thanks for all your responses, specially Will for the link, Mike for moral
support and OldMan for the helpful tip...
On searching I found KB 827663 ...which specifically relates to my problem,
I think:-

"When you run Microsoft Windows XP, you may randomly receive an error
message on a blue screen that references a bugcheck ID 0x0000008E
(KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) error. "

It refers to a hotfix still not released (under testing ) with the file
attribute :

"
Date Time Version Size File name
--------------------------------------------------------
28-Aug-2003 22:43 5.1.2600.1265 1,811,840 Win32k.sys "

The Win32k.sys in Windows/system32 and Windows/system32/dllcache are of
version 5.1.2600.1275 (xpsp2.030825-2117).

My question is, do I need the hotfix consisting of earlier version?? If yes,
where do I get it from, as I my XP Home is OEM version and I am not entitled
to free help from Microsoft?

On the assumption that suddenly Windows can't decide that one of the drivers
need updating (and it is available ), I thought it to be more probable that
one of the drivers has got corrupted;
moreover, I already have all the latest versions of all available drivers.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Display Adapter "nVidia GeForce4 MX 440"
and I have been able to send this update without experiencing BSOD, yet !!!

Any help will be gratefully appreciated. (ok, OldMan??)
Thanks
