BSOD at Startup

B

Bam Henehan

I've been working with a software vendor's tech reps about
how their anti-virus software causes an abnormal startup
when I reboot. XP appears to start normally, then the
screen goes black, a blue screen containing text (BSOD)
appears for only an instant, followed by a few seconds of
black scren, which is then replaced with an "abnormal start
screen" (white text on black background) telling me that
recently installed software may have prevented normal
startup. I can then start my PC using the "Last Known Good
Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)."

I'm not looking for help with the vendor's problem, but
they are asking me for the exact wording on the BSOD, which
I cannot provide because it flashes for only an instant. I
have unchecked the "Automatic Restart" selection in my
advanced Setup and Recovery settings with no apparent
effect.

Vendor Tech Reps are also asking me for the memory MINIDUMP
that is supposed to be generated when a BSOD ocurs. I've
scoured my entire HD (including hidden files and hidden
system files) but the MINIDUMP seems not to be written.

QUESTIONS:

1. Is there anything I can do to freeze the BSOD so I can
read the contents of that screen?

2. Can anyone explain why appearance of the BSOD does not
cause the memory minidump to occur? (I've tried using the
full memory dump option, but that doesn' happen either).

If you can get into xp in safe mode or something you can go to system properties, startup and recovery and uncheck the "automatic reboot" box. Then you will have time to read the error msg
