Browsing Network Neighborhood reboots XP machines.

I have a small network with several win98se machines, a
winXP Home machine and a winXP Pro machine connected to an
NT domain. (10mbps) In Explorer when the XP home machine
tries to browse the XP pro machine or a computer on
another workgroup the XP home machine reboots. (the
flashlight comes up in Explorer, then the black screen
with the memory count down) It can browse the PDC, the
BDC and the other win98 machines fine.

The XP pro machine reboots when I try to browse any
machine other than the PDC or BDC. The win98 machines and
the servers have no problem browsing either of the XP
machines or any other machine.

One machine is a new Dell Pentium 4 and the other is an
AMD XP1900. Both have built in net cards. All machines
have IPX and TCP/IP running. The Dell came with XP home,
the AMD was win98 and worked fine before upgrading to XP
Pro. All MS recommended patches are installed.

I thought the big sell on XP was that it protects it's
self against hardware/software errors.

Any suggestions? (maybe go back to win98??) :)

Try this - right-click My Computer, select Properties, on the Advanced tab
click the Settings button for Startup and Recovery. Turn off the option to
automatically reboot on an error. Restart the system and browse the network
again and see if an error condition results.

With automatic reboot turned off I get a blue screen dump
instead. DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL in Nwlnkspx.sys.
When I turn off the nwlink spx protocol I can get to the
other computers. But then I can't get to the Internet
since the Proxy server uses IPX. Is there a bug fix
available for the nwlnkspx.sys driver? It is a Microsoft
driver version 5.1.2600.0

The first thing I'd try would be updated network card drivers or a different
network card.

On the AMD machine... The Ethernet port is built-in to the
main board. I downloaded and installed the latest driver
from the manufacturer's website. Still reboots when
browsing. Then I ran Windows Update and Microsoft updated
the driver back to the one I had to start with. Still
reboots when browsing. (only when IPX is enabled) I
haven't tried getting another netcard yet.

307338 is the closest I could find at MS. But it's for NT,
not XP. And it says I have to pay for the support call to
get the patch and if it works I'll get a refund.

I think I'll try calling Dell support for the Dell machine
since it's under warantee. Haven't had much luck with
Dell's award winning support in the past, but it's worth a
shot.
