Browse and Save As Very Slow

Recently I have had to wait 60 seconds or longer to do a browse or save as
when working with files in any application. Also the browse or save box, when
it appears, is missing icons on the left side and there are 2 desktop icons,
one without any writing below it.

First job to do, go here.
ActiveX Spyware & Adware Scanning
http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php
This scanner is an ActiveX applet. After a short delay in which your
browser downloads the control file, you will receive a "Warning
Dialogue" requesting permission for the scanner to run. Click "Yes" and
the applet will pop up and scan. You will be alerted if any spyware is
found. When a spyware or malware is found, you will be alerted and
asked if you want to remove it. If no spyware is found, the scanner
will disappear on its own.
If nothing happens, or if you are using a browser other than Internet
Explorer, click here and choose either "Open" or "Run this program from
its current location". Do not choose "Download".

Thanks Jmatt I did evertyhing on your list but this did nothing to help my
problem. I do run 2 separate spyware programs and the machine is clean.

Anyone else have an idea?

I developed the same problem about a month ago. I have tried many things to
try to fix it unsuccessfully. Have you ever figured out the cause?

Never did. I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows. I tried a
"repair", but it did nothing. I removed all Norton and still nothing. That's
when I gave up and did a total new install. So far things work fine.
