Brother HL-2040 laser printer not working properly with XP?

I have a Brother HL-2040 (black toner only) laser printer plugged into my XP
PC. For some reason, it will not print colored text in a document as black-
it prints colored text in shades of grey. It did not behave this way on my
old '98 PC. I have looked at all the printer settings so am I missing a
setting someplace in XP that controls how it prints colored text?

Have you checked the mfr site to see if there's a special XP driver?

Not for sure, but I would try this.
Under printer properties>color management>uncheck print colors as gray scale

Good idea. After posting my message here I called Brother and they didn't
know the answer but they did escalate my call to an engineer that is
supposed to call me back. Thanks.

So you want blue type on a yellow background to print as a black page?

Hmm.
