Broadcom Fast Ethernet 4401

Hi All,

If someone can point me in the right direction, that
would be much appreciated.

Recently, a friend's integrated Broadcom Fast Ethernet
4401 adapter (ASUS P4PE motherboard) stopped being
detected properly by Windows. It's been working fine for
months, and I'm not sure if this has any relation to a
network setting change I recently made or not:

He has an internal network (using a broadband router),
and three computers connected. He wanted to have the
files on one computer (A) shared so they were accessible
on another computer (B). I'm not very familiar with
Windows XP, so I went to share the folder on
computer "A", and it said that I should run the "Network
Setup Wizard" to enable file sharing. I did that, and
told it that there was an existing shared Internet
connection (not on that computer). That seemed to work
fine, and I was then able to access the files on
computer "A" from computer "B" no problem. It seemed to
work fine for a few days.

However, a few days later (2 - 2.5 weeks ago), they
started to experience a problem where Internet access
(web browsing) wasn't working. As they left on a trip
for 2 weeks, I just found out about it yesterday... they
were able to get e-mail access a couple of days ago, but
now there are two "?" devices ("Ethernet Controller"
and "PCI Device") in the Device Manager under "Unknown
Devices". Everytime the computer boots now, the "New
Hardware Found" wizard shows up for the "Ethernet
Controller". I checked / tried everything I could think
of:

1. In the BIOS, the LAN adapter is "enabled".

2. Running the "New Hardware Found" wizard in default
mode (allowing it to search for the right driver) comes
up with nothing.

3. I checked the drivers included with the motherboard
CD, and for some reason, the "Broadcom" driver wasn't
listed (no ethernet drivers on the CD). The only thing I
thought it might be was the "Update Windows INF"
drivers. I installed that, and no change.

4. I went to the ASUS website, and downloaded the newest
version of the 4401 Fast Ethernet Adapter drivers. When
I try to "specify" the location (the "Windows XP" foler
under the "Drivers" folder of the unzipped driver files)
when running the "New Hardware Found" wizard, it still
says it can't locate the driver.

4. It seems that these motherboards have two options for
Ethernet drivers: Gigabit or Fast Ethernet. I opened
the case up, and on the motherboard I found this chip
label:

Broadcom (R)
BCM4401KFB
RT0248 P11
67627 S

By this label, I'm assuming it is the 4401 Fast Ethernet
adapter. (there's only one driver zip file on the
website for the 4401 in the P4PE motherboard drivers
section)

I'm starting to think it could be a hardware issue, but
they've asked the person who they bought the computer
from to look at it, and he's not sure yet. He thinks it
might be Windows corruption. Is there a definitive way
to figure out what the problem is? Any ideas on how to
fix this?

Thanks,
Kurosh

Kurosh,

I'm having the same exact problem. Have you found a fix/resolution?

Thanks,
Sascha
